test current LDAP clients (address books) against ldap-too

Reported by: geofft Owned by: jdreed
Priority: high Milestone: Natty Beta

Description

ldap-too.mit.edu is a better and more intentional version of ldap.mit.edu, and will become ldap after testing with the NMC (according to mark), which will happen fairly soon. We should test all our current LDAP configuration for address books and so forth to make sure that everything still works. I don't expect them to break schemas, but sanity checking can never hurt.

Anyone have word on the ldap-too project? If it hasn't gone anywhere, there's no reason for the urgent milestone (it really should be milestoned for "shortly before they're actually going to turn ldap-too into ldap").

  • Priority changed from low to high

Garry says we should switch debathena-ldap-config (and presumably all our other ldap.mit.edu-referencing packages) to ldap-too.mit.edu, and it's usable but won't be renamed to ldap.mit.edu in bounded time.

Bumping the priority since we actually want to do this soon.

I have tested ldap-too with Alpine and Thunderbird, and it works (but thunderbird-config is broken anyway)
Evolution appears not to use ldap (it probably should), and mutt... has a comment about running an ldap query script in the SIPB locker, but doesn't. And ... I have no idea what, if anything, ldap-config actually affects.

Evolution also works.

I have a commit staged for this, pending confirmation from Garry that we really do need to care about ldap-too for something as trivial as directory lookups.

ACK'd,built and uploaded alppine-config 1.17 and ldap-config 1.7

Tested with alpine, looks fine (still looks up names, and also the address book now looks for lists with the mailing list bit set instead of lists with the group bit set which seems more useful). As far as ldap-config, the ldapsearch command also does in fact work against ldap-too.
