Description
Shortly after booting, we had about 1.4K processes. It went way up the week start Sept 4. Other than that, it's been gradually trending up, and has been hovering around 5K of late. Previously, our peak process count (this year) was about 3K, with much shallower slopes (and noticeably longer uptime, I think). What's the change? Is there something we can do about it?

Munin ( http://sipb-noc.mit.edu/munin/linerva.mit.edu/index.html) is probably helpful here.

Perhaps not coincidentally, logged in users is also spiking ( http://sipb-noc.mit.edu/munin/linerva.mit.edu/linerva/users.html).

#1261 would be a likely partial fix, as would #1265.
